Under the proposed official name change, the department’s new name would “better reflect the breadth of the faculty’s scholarship and teaching.”
Most people think of “African American Studies” primarily as Americans. However, according to the press release, the department investigates how race and Black people are formed around the world, particularly in Africa, Europe, the Caribbean and Latin America.
Sociology and African-American studies professor Mary Pattillo stated in the announcement that “our work is expanding, beyond national or regional boundaries, and the word ‘Black’ is the capture that scope.”
The department was formed when more than 100 NU students took over the district’s office in 1968 to protest racial segregation and improve the situation for Black students. In the original petition, opponents used the phrase “Black Studies,” which faculty members mentioned in the proposed name change.
In April 2022, the faculty voted unanimously in favor of the name change. The faculty made the informal announcement of the move at its 50th Anniversary Celebration of African American Studies in May.
The Block Museum of Art will host a symposium, “Black to Front,” to celebrate the name change Friday, from noon to 6 p.m. Poetry, music, and panels featuring faculty and students. All members will be included in the event. Keynote speeches will be delivered by Trinity College professor of American studies Davarian Baldwin and film and culture critic Zeba Blay.
