Gilberto and “Garota de Ipanema” (Girl from Ipanema) meet by chance. The song was first written by Antônio Carlos Jobim and Vincius de Moraes in 1962, then covered in English as “The Girl from Ipanema” on March 18, 1963, by American saxophonist Stan Getz and Brazilian guitarist Joo Gilberto.
According to A&R engineer Phil Ramone, Astrud Gilberto, who was in the control room during the recording session, suggested singing on the track when the opportunity arose. She was a surprising choice to perform the lyrics that Norman Gimbel translated, despite not being a professional singer.
