In Oregon, Dan Steele Eaton was coached by a former track and field athlete. Steele improved Eaton’s 1500 m, hurdles, high jump and pole vault. He improved his pole vault by 1.2 m in a year and scored 8,000 points in his college sixth pentathlon. After Steele left for Northern Iowa in 2010, Eaton was coached by pentathlon coach Harry Marra.
Eaton won the 2008 NCAA pentathlon. Eaton won the 2009 NCAA pentathlon with 8,241 points. He won the 2009 NCAA Indoor Heptathlon with 5,988 points. Eaton won the 2009 Division I Championship.
Eaton broke the triathlon world record at the 2010 NCAA Indoor Championships. In 2010, he won his third consecutive NCAA tenthon title with 8,457 points. He was the first person to win three pentathlons in a row.
