October 10, 2023 – Chapman Highway, Eastern Tennessee – A devastating car accident on Chapman Highway has claimed the lives of two individuals, 30-year-old Tyler Coy Smelcer and 31-year-old Ashley Marie Warren. The accident occurred on October 10, resulting in a tragic end to a police pursuit.
According to reports from the Eastern Tennessee District Marshals Service, Smelcer, wanted in Blount County for heroin distribution since September 12, was being pursued by officers. The pursuit led to a high-speed chase when Smelcer was spotted at Food City in Seymour. Despite attempts to maintain a safe distance, Smelcer’s erratic driving led to a pursuit that ended in a horrifying crash.
Smelcer, driving north in the southbound lanes, swerved to avoid a stopped vehicle but ultimately collided with it and a steel KUB utility pole. The impact was catastrophic, splitting Smelcer’s car in half. Both Smelcer and Warren, who were not wearing seatbelts, were ejected from the vehicle. Despite immediate first aid efforts by marshals, Smelcer was pronounced dead at the scene. Warren was rushed to a local hospital but tragically succumbed to her injuries later.
The accident also affected two occupants of the vehicle that was struck, causing minor injuries. It was revealed that Smelcer did not possess a valid driver’s license due to a previous conviction for driving under the influence in 2021, which had led to the revocation of his license.
The family of Tyler Coy Smelcer and Ashley Marie Warren will release an obituary, providing further details about their lives and funeral arrangements. The community mourns the loss of these two lives, emphasizing the importance of road safety and the devastating consequences of reckless driving.
