Arif Virani was originally chosen to represent Parkdale—High Park in the House of Representatives in 2015, and he was re-elected in 2019 and 2021. Since December 2021, Arif has held the position of Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of International Trade, a position he was nominated to by Prime Minister Trudeau.
In his capacity as the Minister of Immigration’s Parliamentary Secretary (2015–2017), Arif helped Canada welcome more than 50,000 Syrian refugees.
Arif worked on multiculturalism, rebuilding Canada’s Anti-Racism Strategy, and co-developing Canada’s first-ever Indigenous Languages Act with First Nations, Inuit, and Metis leaders during his tenure as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Heritage (2017–18), a position he was appointed to by the Prime Minister.
Arif worked as the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Justice from 2018 to 2021, advancing access to justice, increasing funds for legal aid, removing structural impediments from the court system, and fighting online hatred.
Arif is an Ismaili Muslim from Gujarat, India-based ancestry. As a refugee from Uganda, he immigrated to Canada in 1972. Prior to being elected to government, he worked as a constitutional litigator, fighting for access to justice and human rights.
Arif has had positions as an analyst with the Canadian Human Rights Commission, an investigator at the Montréal-based Commission des droits de la personne, and an assistant trial lawyer at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda who is prosecuting genocide.
Arif has applied his love of equity and inclusiveness to his work as a member of parliament. He is a resolute advocate for both domestic and international human rights, the battle against institutional racism, and his position as chair of the Parliamentary Friends of Tibet in the House of Commons.
Arif received the 2001 Harold G. Fox litigation scholarship at the Middle Temple in London, UK, and the 2008 Wilson-Prichard Award at the University of Toronto in recognition of his contributions to the legal profession and his community. Arif was also one of the founding Board members of Toronto’s legal aid clinic SALCO. He was given the South Asian Bar Association’s 2017 Legal Excellence Award.
Arif has been a committed member of the Parkdale-High Park community. He supports the Redwood Shelter for battered women, volunteers frequently at the Parkdale Food Bank, and leads neighborhood initiatives to combat stigma surrounding mental illness. Arif has flooded the neighborhood rink as a volunteer with Roncyworks and the Sorauren Park Hosers.
After earning a B.A. with honors in history and political science from McGill, Arif went on to the University of Toronto to complete his LL.B., where he graduated as valedictorian. Arif worked with two MPs in Ottawa for a year while he was pursuing his degrees as part of the Parliamentary Internship Program.
Arif is fluent in Hindi, French, and English. His works in Tibetan, Polish, and Ukrainian are ongoing. He is a devoted husband, father, and coach to two young, boisterous sons.
