A year after Australian teammate Elijah Winton won the men’s 400 m freestyle, Australia’s Sam Short took first place. Short, 19, beat Olympic champion Ahmed Hafnaoui of Tunisia by just 0.02 seconds when he finished in 3 minutes 40.68 seconds. Germany’s Lukas Martens won bronze with a time of 1.52 seconds.

Winton, who won the Budapest competition the previous year, came in seventh place overall.

After strong performances in the previous rounds, French runner Leon Marchand and American Carson Foster will be the ones to watch in the 400 meter individual medley as they attempt to topple Michael Phelps’ world record of 4:03.84 from 2008.

The men’s and women’s 4x100m freestyle relay will conclude the day’s activities at Marine Messe Fukuoka Hall.

After receiving a penalty for Jacob Whittle’s early take-off in their morning heat, the England men’s team, who were highly rated before the game to win, will not be on the field.
