Anna Makanju’s career
Anna began working for the International Criminal Court after completing law school and further courses. However, she received several other postings with organizations such as the International Criminal Court for the former Yugoslavia and eventually clerked for Judge Theodore McKee in the Third Circuit Court of Appeals. Anna has worked for Cleary Gottlieb Steen and Hamilton LLP in international arbitration after completing her secretarial job.
She quit and found work as a field organizer for the Obama for America campaign. In 2009, she joined the Obama administration. Anna is currently working at the Transatlantic Security Initiative as a non-resident senior member.
She has experience with Facebook and is a law and public policy expert who works on technology regulation. Prior to that, Anna worked for the Obama administration for nearly eight years in a variety of roles, including as Vice President Biden’s special policy adviser on Europe and Eurasia.
In addition, she held the positions of Director for Russia at the National Security Council, Senior Policy Advisor to Ambassador Samantha Power to the US Mission to the United Nations, and Chief of Staff for Policy. Europe and NATO at the Office of the Secretary of Defense. Anna has also taught and worked with students at the Princeton School of Public and International Relations. Before settling and emigrating to the United States, she spent her early years in the Soviet Union.
