St. Thomas, ON — The community mourns the loss of Anita Christine May, a gifted artist, educator, and nurturer, who graced the world with her talents and unwavering spirit. Born on January 15, 1973, Anita’s journey ended on September 28, 2023, leaving behind a legacy that touched countless lives.
Throughout her life, Anita shared her love for music and language, using her gifts to uplift others and infuse hope and joy into her community. Battling mental illness since 2010, she emerged from the depths of depression with renewed wonder, dedicating over a decade to raising awareness about mental health. Anita’s story was an inspiration, a testament to resilience and a reminder to prioritize mental well-being through art, dance, and music.
Anita is survived by her loving husband and best friend, Brian, her cherished sons, Brendan and Jared, and her loyal furry companions, Annie and Hobbes. She will be forever loved and remembered by her mother Lois (O’Neil), the late Carl Van Geel (1982), and her dear brother Jason Van Geel (Lianne). Anita was also a beloved daughter-in-law, sister-in-law, and aunt, deeply cherished by her extended family.
Her love for family, both biological and chosen, was immeasurable, and she will continue to be loved by them always.
A visitation to honor Anita’s life will be held at Williams Funeral Home, located at 45 Elgin St. in St. Thomas, on Saturday, October 7 from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. All are welcome to attend and pay their respects. Furthermore, a Celebration of Life is planned for Saturday, October 28, dedicated to commemorating the true beauty and magic of Anita’s life.
In lieu of flowers, guests are encouraged to consider making a donation to the Anita May Music and Mental Health Foundation through Williams Funeral Home, contributing to a cause that was dear to Anita’s heart. Anita Christine May will forever remain an inspiration, leaving an indelible mark on the world through her artistic talents and dedication to mental health awareness.
