Angie Thomas, a best-selling author, on Thursday awarded a senior at a Mississippi high school a full scholarship to a private university where she received her undergraduate degree in creative writing. .
Thomas, who is currently on a book tour, made the announcement via video. Students applauded as she announced Ahniya Myers, a student at Canton High, as the winner of the Angie Thomas Writers Scholarship for 2023.
Thomas commented: “When I read Ahniya’s sample articles, I fell in love with her craft. Her intelligence and competence astound me, and I’m sure a student like her was targeted as the creative writing program developed.
Thomas, a 2011 graduate of Jackson, Belhaven University of Mississippi, is remembered by the name of the scholarship. The organization stated in a press release that it was established to support young, aspiring authors who need extra support to realize their authoring ambitions.
According to Thomas, by receiving this scholarship, Ahniya will be able to focus more on her studies and writing, which will help her talent grow. It is an honor to know that this scholarship can be so important to the development of another outstanding writer.
Myers is the fourth student to receive this award, which helps pay for tuition, accommodation and meals for four years at the university. “Ahniya embodies both the spirit of the Angie Thomas Fellowship and the potential of an Angie Thomas Scholar,” said Dr Randall Smith, professor and dean of the university’s department of creative writing.
