News Andy Elliott
At the 32-Man Showdown this past weekend in London, Andrew Elliott’s home field advantage proved to be an important boon. The former Lakehead University wrestler and now the Adrenaline Training Center wrestler defeated Bryan Fedynszyn in the title match to complete his perfect day and claim the 32 men’s title. 2012.
Andrew Elliott of Adrenaline is the last survivor of the 32-Man Showdown.
The activity was held as part of the Sports and Recreation in the Agriplex display at the Western Fairgrounds. Elliott won a razor-thin five-minute match against the larger Fedynszyn, a match that required sudden death injury time to decide the winner using a superb combination of speed , strength and cunning technique.
Elliott succeeded in securing a strong throw and held the position for a surprise victory in extra time. Elliott, currently mentored by James Hourt and Rowan Cunningham at the Adrenaline Training Center, truly deserves his win. Ironically, Elliott won the semi-final against his much smaller Haourt mentor.
Elliott and I had a small chat after the incident. “I have a history of wrestling; I competed in both high school and college at Lakehead University. In fact, one of my former teammates from my university took first place in the Gi division.
“Since high school, John Fraser has trained me in a bit of mixed martial arts, and now I am back here at Adrenaline in London.”
Elliott trains hard, as evidenced by his performance Sunday against John “The Haggis Basher” Fraser, one of the nation’s best mixed martial artists. Elliott has positioned himself well to excel in the sport in the future by partnering with top athletes at Adrenaline in London and with Fraser in Sarnia. Elliott replied emphatically when I asked if this was the hardest test ever for an opponent of his caliber:
“Everything is unique; it’s hard to compare them. Wrestling has some extremely difficult events, but today’s opponents have been excellent. The final here is tough; I had to fight for every takedown, and even if I succeeded, I had to defend my arm because he threatened to strangle me.
Showdown, which has taken place three times, is a special contest because it is an “open weight challenge” while all other competitions are organized by weight class. Each weight class has one semifinalist, with Elliott (165 pounds), Fedynszyn (215 pounds) and Dave Knowles.
