News Allan Gyngell

Allan Gyngell AO, Australia’s top foreign policy authority, has died after a brief illness. Most recently, Mr. Gyngell served as Country Chair of the Australian Institute of International Relations (AIIA) from 2017 to 2022, during which time he made significant contributions to broadening the horizons and scope activities of the organization.

His sharp mind, polite demeanor and remarkable understanding of world politics have earned the AIIA and all other organizations with which he is affiliated with great credibility.

Mr. Gyngell served as director of China Matters as well as professor emeritus at the School of Asia and the Pacific at the Australian National University. In addition, he holds the positions of Adjunct Professor at the Crawford School of Public Policy and Director of the Crawford Australian Leadership Forum.

Gyngell is the cousin of David Gyngell, the former president of Nine Network, and the brother of comedian Kym Gyngell. He graduated as a member of the diplomatic service’s “Class of 69,” among notable individuals being Dennis Richardson, Ric Smith, and Sandy Hollway.

Mr. Gyngell possesses extensive knowledge of analysis and international politics. His initial assignment was in Rangoon, Burma (now Myanmar). The UK’s full withdrawal of its troops “east of the Suez Canal” was followed by a deployment to Singapore, where Britain saw the impact on the wider Indo-Pacific region. . He was then assigned to Washington, DC.

He was sent to Canberra in 1974, when he supported the establishment of Australia as ASEAN’s first official dialogue partner, and attended the inaugural meeting in Indonesia. He was appointed to lead the Foreign Affairs Department of the Prime Minister’s Office and Cabinet in 1989, and from 1993 to 1996 he was Prime Minister Paul Keating’s top foreign policy adviser.

Prior to being appointed Director General of the Office of National Assessment of Australia (ONA) from 2009 to 2013, he served as the Founding Executive Director of the Lowy Institute for International Policy from 2003 to 2009. There, the Office of National Intelligence absorbed the ONA.

Long after he joined the Lowy Institute, Mr. Gyngell still spoke there regularly. In 2009, he was named an Officer in the Order of Australia (AO) for his contributions to international relations. Mr. Gyngell is a prolific author and contributor to peer-reviewed articles and analysis. “Sadly, we have lost a great Australian,” AIIA President Heather Smith said in a statement released today.
