On December 18, 1994, while returning to her apartment in Port Elizabeth after spending the night with her friends, Botha was threatened by a man wielding a knife. The assailant then told her to move to the next seat and drove her car to retrieve his accessory.

The criminals took her to a remote location on the outskirts of town. The criminals’ names were Frans du Toit and Theuns Kruger. They first raped her and attempted to choke her.

Furthermore, they stabbed her in the stomach 37 times because Theuns wanted to destroy her reproductive organs. They then abandoned her with multiple wounds all over her body. Following their conviction, the criminals were sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
