Alicia Malone hopes that the new series will shed light on the challenge that old movie fans have faced over the years.
Reframed Classics, a new series on Turner Classic Movies (TCM), features in-depth discussions of 18 culturally significant films from the 1920s through the 1960s that also include questionable elements. The TCM host spoke to Fox News about why the network is starting the series now, how movie fans can watch their favorite movies in 2021, and whether some masterpieces will be released. whether or not a given action should be labeled with a warning.
My co-hosts and I were discussing how we should approach films with objectionable content in the conversations we had backstage. How far should we go with annotations? When should we sound the alarm? Should we pay attention to specific celebrities who have troubled lives? Do we need to emphasize the director? Should these movies even be shown? Shall we keep? As a result of all this discussion, we decided to hold a formal roundtable in a public place where the organizers could further discuss these concerns. In theory, we wouldn’t stop watching these movies because we didn’t know the answer. However, it is important to engage in these awkward discussions and overcome these gray areas. Because there is no real black.
In my opinion, it is important that we come to terms with some painful, troubling and embarrassing aspects of our past so that we can analyze, consider and face them. If you take out part of these movies, that’s like claiming that racism doesn’t exist. If these photos and stories were to be completely ignored, it would be even more painful for those harmed by them. We have to confront them. In fact, that’s what we discuss.
We all contributed to topics we wanted to tackle as hosts. I suggested to one of the programmers that we show a movie about gender identity because it’s a community that is frequently excluded from these discussions.
