On August 30, 2023, officers from the Street Crimes Unit were engaged in surveillance in the 6800 block of Cross Spring, with the mission of locating a suspect wanted for Aggravated Assault Against a Public Servant. During their operation, officers identified the suspect’s vehicle and initiated a traffic stop.

However, what began as a routine traffic stop took an unexpected turn when the suspect’s vehicle collided with a marked police cruiser and then swiftly fled the scene. The fleeing vehicle continued driving in the wrong direction on the access road to Interstate 10 east.

Undeterred by the collision, the suspect abandoned the vehicle and attempted to escape on foot, with law enforcement officers in close pursuit. During the pursuit, the suspect opened fire on the officers, leading to one officer sustaining a gunshot wound to the arm.

As the situation escalated, the suspect, Michael Kirkland, began shooting at passing cars on eastbound Interstate Highway 10 (IH 10), seemingly attempting to gain access to one of the vehicles. In response, two law enforcement officers engaged in a firefight with the suspect.

Tragically, the exchange of gunfire resulted in the loss of Michael Kirkland’s life. The 40-year-old suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. Meanwhile, the injured officer was transported to the hospital, and medical professionals report that his condition is currently stable.
