In a devastating incident that unfolded on Sunday, December 17, 2023, the Brandon community mourns the loss of 27-year-old Evan Mallatt, a longtime resident of the South Dakota city. The accident, which claimed Mallatt’s life, occurred when his 1997 Chevrolet CK 107 failed to stop at the T-intersection with 480th Avenue, resulting in a collision with an embankment.
Evan Mallatt, known for his residence in Brandon and contributions as a hardworking individual, succumbed to injuries sustained in the tragic car accident. Unfortunately, Mallatt was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the incident, and alcohol use is currently under investigation, according to preliminary reports from the South Dakota Highway Patrol.
The accident, under investigation by the South Dakota Highway Patrol, unfolded as Mallatt’s vehicle became airborne after failing to stop at the intersection. Tragically, Evan Mallatt was pronounced dead at the scene.
Neumiller Harvesting, for whom Evan had worked for two years, expressed their condolences: “Our thoughts and prayers go out to Evan Mallatt’s family. He was in a tragic car accident this weekend that ended up taking his life. Evan worked for us for two years. He was a hard-working guy, always willing to lend a hand, and he always had a story on the tip of his tongue. Born on June 6th, 1996, Evan Mallatt was a Brandon native and graduate of Brandon Valley High School. Described as more than just a friend, Evan was celebrated for his exceptional work ethic and willingness to assist others. His storytelling ability added a unique charm to his character, making ordinary moments memorable. Evan’s infectious smile and positive outlook brightened the darkest days, leaving an indelible mark on those fortunate to have known him.
The obituary and funeral arrangements for Evan Mallatt will be announced at a later date by the family, as the community of Brandon comes to terms with the loss of a cherished member. Brandon, located five miles east of Sioux Falls, has a population of 11,048 as of the 2020 census.
