In response to this concerning incident, Grasslands ward Community Group issued a statement expressing their concerns and outlining potential initiatives. The group emphasized the urgency for increased police presence in the region, citing a shortage of 58 officers compared to other parts of Melbourne. The statement highlighted a strong advocacy for bolstering law enforcement resources to enhance community safety.
Additionally, the Community Group proposed plans for advocating the expansion of sports and recreational opportunities in Cairnlea and surrounding areas. Promising to prioritize these initiatives, the group aims to create more inclusive and diverse recreational avenues for the community’s benefit.

“After yesterday’s tragic stabbing at Cairnlea Shopping Centre, I spoke with shopkeepers at the Centre today. I also arranged for support services via Councillor Virginia Tachos, & Brimbank Council for those impacted, with many thanks to Virginia for her outstanding work.ANYONE with video of yesterday please let me know asap.I have also been interviewed by the Herald Sun, & called on our local MP, the Minister for Youth, to actually engage with the community and listen to our concerns regarding the lack of sports and recreational opportunities for the WHOLE community here, apart from soccer.For youth in particular, the lack of such coupled with atrocious bus services in an area of high youth unemployment is a recipe for disengagement and anti social activity.I also called on the Minister to actually act on her promise on 18/3/22 to follow up with the Department of Transport regarding bus services here, which are frankly pathetic.We can get a free bus to and from the pokies, but we don’t even have a bus down the main thoroughfare of Cairnlea after 23 years!If elected to Council I will be fighting for better outcomes for the whole community.”
