Maricsa Trejo will compete in Season 8 of the Food Network’s Halloween Baking Championship. She will compete against 11 other bakers in a spooky theme for a crown and a $25,000 cash prize. The eight-episode series will be set in a haunted hotel and will premiere September 12, 2022, at 9 p.m. ET. Maricsa Trejo, owner of La Casita Bakeshop (Richardson Bakery), is well known in the North Texas pastry industry. Stephanie Boswell, Carla Hall and Zac Young, the judges, will judge her abilities. She’ll also get a tour of the ten most haunted hotels in America if she wins the contest.
According to the official synopsis of the show:
“In this season of HALLOWEEN CAKES, host John Henson is the custodian of a haunted hotel and will greet competitors for an eight-week stay, unless their cupcakes fail to impress the judges, in which case they will have to “check out” and take the elevator to the mysterious 13th floor, never to return to the guests.”
Maricsa Trejo is excited to join the tournament.
Maricsa told The Dallas Morning News that she had moments of nervousness at the thought of doing well in the league. She was awarded the James Beard Award semi-finalist for Outstanding Baker earlier this year. This adds to her anxiety as she has to defend her point of view. The Halloween Baking Championship candidate said she faced anxiety and pressure to do well:
“I was a little apprehensive but even more excited to be involved in an activity like this.” I have severe anxiety and being able to handle that level of stress has been a challenge for me.”
The recent honor she received has added to the tension, as Maricsa admits:
“After being nominated for James Beard, I was worried that I wouldn’t be taken seriously if I lost or didn’t get on a show at all, but I’m glad I did and can make myself proud.”
Maricsa and her husband, Alex Henderson, own Richardson Bakery, which recently expanded into a 6,000 square foot space. Her Instagram bio describes her as “a professional baker, art-maker by night, reader by day, smile-maker by evening, singer by morning, and adventurer by nature”. She currently has more than 600 followers. Maricsa is a self-taught baking entrepreneur from Texas who “lives and breathes Halloween,” according to her show profile.
The candidate has been open about her enthusiasm for Halloween and is well known for the seasonal pastries she creates for La Casita each year, including Frankenstein scones, bloody hand pies, and werewolf claws, making her a “natural fit” for the contest.
While she couldn’t say how successful she was in the Halloween Baking Championship, she told The Dallas Morning News that she was happy for her fans to follow her and the other cast members on their trip. Justin Dominguez, Marcus Brackett, Jill Davis, AJ DeDiego, Kristi Descher, Lola Forbes, Margarita Garcia, Alexey Ivanov, Zac Mercer, Blayre Wright and Lauren Rogers are among the other participants competing in the Halloween Baking Championship.
