Manipur woman paraded video original goes viral on Twitter amidst ongoing violence

A grieving video of two women being paraded naked in Manipur came to light on Wednesday, even though the incident happened two months ago on May 4 in Kangpokpi district. The video sparked widespread outrage, which led to the arrest of the main defendant, Heradas (32), who was identified from a viral video where he was seen wearing a green t-shirt. The minister confirmed the arrest took place on Wednesday evening.

A devastating landslide hit the Raigad district of Maharashtra early Thursday morning, affecting around 48 families. At least five people were killed and there were fears that several others could be trapped under the rubble. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) immediately launched a search and rescue operation, deploying two teams to the affected area in Irshalwadi village, Khalapur tehsil, Raigad.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government faced harsh criticism on Wednesday for its failure to control violence in Manipur. The criticism comes after a disturbing video surfaced on social media, showing two women being gang-raped by a group of men and paraded naked in the street. The incident occurred on May 4 in Kangpokpi district, with at least 80 people killed and more than 40,000 displaced due to ethnic and community conflicts in the area since the beginning of May.

State police have made the first arrest in connection with the incident in Manipur, as confirmed by Minister Biren Singh on Twitter. However, the number of arrests was not specified. Singh stressed that a thorough investigation is underway and strict action will be taken against all perpetrators, including the possibility of the death penalty.

The Supreme Court of India expressed deep concern about the sad images from the Manipur incident and called on the government to update the court on the actions taken to arrest the perpetrators and prevent such incidents from recurring. Chief Justice DY Chandrachud said the case was unacceptable in a constitutional democracy.
